What are Parking Domains?
There is a lot of confusion of terms in the SEO industry.
Domain Parking to one person may mean to by a domain for latter development,
but for another is may mean to buy a domain related to their company and
point it to their main domain for better web rankings.
In this article we will be talking about domains that will
be pointed to a main domain for branding security or misspellings.
What use are Parking Domains?
Many companies will buy domains for branding reasons. Say a company called
"my company" has a domain called "www.mycompany.com" and they bring out a new product called
"New Product" they may buy a domain name called
www.newproduct.com and might use a 301 Redirect
to redirect that site to their main page.
Along with branding reasons, companies will also buy domains with misspelling
in the URL. For example, SEO Fever might buy a domain called www.seofeever.com and use
a 301 Redirect to
point it at www.seofever.com so we don't miss out on hits that have been spelled
incorrectly
How many Parking Domains can I have?
You can have as many parking domains as you want. But keep
in mind that you should only use a parking domain if it relates to your business
in some way, such as a product or service. If you don't, it may hurt
your rankings in some search engines.
How do I setup a Parking Domain?
To setup a parking domain, you will need to register
the domain you wish to park, and then point it to a web server. You will then
need to setup a 301 Redirect
to your main domain.
If you do not setup a 301 Redirect
and just point the domain to the same content you are currently serving on your main domain,
you risk the chance of getting penalised buy the search engines for having duplicate content as search engines will index both your main domain and any parked domains as the same content.
